Stroke patients with hypertension may not be benefiting from hypertension medication, but may be at risk from taking them.
This is according to a study at Oslo University in Norway.
For the study researchers administered candesartan to 1,017 patients
with acute stroke and a systolic blood pressure of 140 or higher.
A control group was given a placebo. They were followed for six months.
The study found:
-18 patients taking the medication suffered kidney failure compared to 13 taking the placebo.
-9 Patients taking the medication had symptoms associated with low blood pressure while 5 on the placebo had low blood pressure.
Researchers concluded that medication for lowering blood pressure is not beneficial in stroke patients.
