Santa Clause Makes Changes to Visits
Santas this year may be making changes to their routine visits to protect themselves and others from the H1N1 virus.
Overweight persons have been linked to severe attacks of the swine flu, since Santa Claus is usually overweight or obese it poses added health risks.
Associations for Santas are taking actions. One in particular was a seminar recently in Philedelphia on swine flu.
Some suggestions are:
- Keeing sick kids away
- Placing hand sanitizer stations around malls
- Santas washing their suits more often ( every day)
- Santas to get all the flu shots including the H1N1 vaccine.
- Santas using hand sanitizers and setting an example to kids.
There was a case mentioned in which a kid too sick to be at school was seen fit to be with Santa. This year sick children will be found unfit to sit with Santa or shake his hand.

Alternative Medicine Is Used Against Swine flue
Alternative therapies used to fight flus and influenza are considered good against the H1N1 virus.
Alternative medicine practitioners reported that with herbal remedies and good nutrition people without the vaccine can avoid the swine flu. Some herbal remedies mentioned are: astragalus, geisemium and cecchetto.
A healthy immune system can be a defense against many illnessses including colds and flus. It would therefore make sense that if these herbal remedies work by building the immune system, they would protect against the swine flu. F0r those whose immune system is already suppressed this may be a challenged.

Smoking Cessation Is Not Easy- How To Quit
Nicotine is the killer drug in the cigarettes and cigars that people smoke. When you smoke the nicotine affects the brain making you temporarily calm and more alert; you actually get a mood boost. When the effects wear off the cravings to be calm and alert returns and you go for another cigarette for a boost. These personal benefits make it difficult to quit. Smoking however is bad for health because it is a #1 cause of various cancers, cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases and more. It suppresses your immune system. Smoking is a leading cause of premature death.
Smoking is modifiable risk factor that can be stopped. There are many things one can do to quit and stay quit.
===============================================
While you are a smoker:
Think about the reasons why you smoke and write them down.
Try alternate ways to keep calm and alert.
Get sufficient sleep: instead of staying up with a cigarette, hit the pillow for sleep.
Have some free time? Go for physical activity such as walking, running and cycling. Don't remain inactive too long.
Purchase a good exercise/fitness equipment for home use.
Cut out habits that seem to accompany your smoking routine, for example: A certain a past time that trigggers the urge to smoke.
Hang out with people you know that don't smoke. en you are ready to quit
- Set a date to do so
- Tell your spouse or friends and ask for their support
- Join a no smoking program online
- Check out the resources available in your local community
- Hang out with non smoking colleagues or peers
- Try nicotine replacement therapy
If quitting is still difficult , try a behaviour change program. There are some examples on the left. Parents can be an example to protect children from second hand smoke.
